How to Clean a Wooden Fence
Share |

A wooden fence is a great way to maintain privacy in your backyard, but you’ll eventually have to clean it of dirt, mold or algae. Since wood is a porous surface, dirt can get deep into the crevices where you can’t see it, making it difficult to clean. You don’t have to hire a professional to keep your fence looking like new. With regular cleaning — every few years or so — you can maintain your fence and be sure it stays in great shape.

Step 1

Mix one-part bleach to two-parts water in your bucket.

Step 2

Apply a generous coating of the bleach mixture to the fence using a rag. Allow it to soak.

Step 3

Watch the fence for signs that it’s starting to look brighter. It might take around 15 minutes.

Step 4

Use your hose to rinse off the bleach mixture, dirt and grime. Set the hose to a high-pressure setting. Alternatively, you can use a pressure washer, following the directions of the manufacturer.

Step 5

Allow the fence to dry.

Step 6

Inspect your fence and touch up as necessary. Your fence should be mostly clean, but look it over for some parts that you missed. You may need to scrub these areas with a sponge or a hard-bristled brush to loosen the dirt.
